Described as one of the
area's most exciting emerging artists, Michael Canty exploded onto the
jazz scene with passion and energy. Originally from New York, Michael's
influences include Billie Holliday, Duke Ellington, Bessie Smith, Marvin Gaye,
Sam Cooke, Donnie Hathaway, DJ Rogers, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin and Chaka
Khan. Joe Williams and Nat King Cole. A fan describes him as, "A ball of fire
with a unique and captivating sound". "People feel you when you sing from
experience"; Michael was quoted as saying in an interview with a NY Daily News
columnist.
Michael began performing early
touring Europe with guitarist and bandleader Doug Bischoff. He could be found
performing at venues such as Lincoln Center, Sweetwaters and a host of Soho and
Greenwich Village clubs with a group called the Young Jazz Soldiers.
Leaving music to "Get serious about my life", Michael
began a long and successful career in Telecommunications. "Although I had a new
career, I couldn't stay away from the clubs. A great performance is a high
everyone should experience". Returning from a long break and standing in his
birthright, Michael resurfaced in Washington DC studying with jazz Diva Ronnie
Wells, piano impresario Ron Elliston and performing with talent the likes of
piano master Elsworth Gibson, Bassist Wes "Sugar" Biles and Drummers Jeff Neal
and Rodney Mathis. Michael sings jazz, blues, gospel, R&B and any other
musical genre that allows deep expression. Michael began recording a CD of jazz
standards in November.
