Blues Alley ends the summer strong with some smoking jazz! Latin legend Arturo Sandoval starts things off this weekend. Next up, Wallace Roney. Then, a rare super group with the Eddie Daniels-Bob James Project featuring Peter Erskine. These are just a few of the amazing artists with more to come at Blues Alley!
Granted political asylum in July 1990 and US citizenship in 1999, Sandoval and his family now call Miami, Florida home. A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn't take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the World's most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer.

His consummate artistry and eagerness to explore and transcend musical boundaries has led him to collaborate with such diverse musicians as Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Carole King, Ornette Coleman, Sonny Rollins, Prince, Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell, among numerous others
Eddie Daniels is that rarest of rare musicians who is not only equally at home in both jazz and classical music, but excels at both with breathtaking virtuosity. Eddie has had a long and successful career beginning with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra in the 1960's. His clarinet and tenor can be heard on many recordings including those with Freddie Hubbard, Richard Davis, Don Patterson, and duets with Bucky Pizzarelli. Bob James is best know for his commercially successful recordings and his collaborations with Earl Klugh & David Sanborn, the Taxi TV theme, and the fusion-flavored Fourplay group. Peter Erskine has played drums since the age of four and is known for his versatility and love of working in different musical contexts. He appears on more than 500 albums and film scores, and has won two Grammy Awards, plus an Honorary Doctorate.
Child prodigy Azar Lawrence has made numerous contributions to the American music scene positioning him in the company of a veritable whose who among the country's traditional art form, and placing his name in the pantheon of our indigenous artist that have taken part in blazing the trail for The Music worldwide. Composer, arranger Azar Lawrence has performed in the world of American music for over three decades. Azar's playing style is often defined as "his sax is on fire." Azar's musical acumen and versatility has made it possible for him to perform with some of America's vanguard artist such as the late Frank Zappa, and has gained him the admiration of many of America's great recording artist of a variety of music genres.
Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has firmly established himself as among the premier players in jazz and beyond. Ever-stretching into more challenging and colorful ways to flex his musical chops, Hargrove has left indelible imprints in a vast array of artful settings. During his tenure on the Verve label alone, he has recorded an album with a hand-picked collection of the world's greatest tenor saxophonists, an album of standards with strings and, in 2003, introduced his own hip hop/jazz collective The RH Factor with the groundbreaking CD Hard Groove. Hargrove has also won Grammy® Awards for two vastly different projects. In 1997, Roy's Cuban-based band Crisol won the Best Latin Jazz Performance Grammy for the album Habana. And in 2002, Hargrove, Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker won Best Instrumental Jazz Album, Individual or Group, for their three-way collaboration Directions in Music.
