bio...

THREE FOR ALL is a piano trio out of the Washington, D.C. area. Its members include Allyn Johnson on piano, Mykle Lyons on bass and Lenny Robinson on drums. Three For All's debut recording on the ALM Record label is entitled "Premonition". While this CD is the first for the group, the members in the group all have backgrounds that more than prepares them for this venture.

Allyn

Allyn Johnson is a Washington, D.C. native and attended the University of the District of Columbia and received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1997 graduating Magne Cum Laude. Since that time he has divided his time between playing and teaching. Currently an Associate professor at UDC, he also is called on to perform with many artists. A partial list would include Buck Hill, Andrew White, Bobby Watson, Keter Betts, Christian McBride and Stanley Turrentine. Allyn is also a very accomplished composer and arranger. This is very evident on "Premonition", as the majority of the compositions are his. Mr. Johnson is certainly one to look out for.

Mykle Lyons is originally from Ocean Springs, Miss. and grew up in the New Orleans area. He attended VCU and studied with the great Ellis Marsalis as well as Clarence Seay. Since that time, Mykle has also divided his time between playing and teaching with more emphasis up to this point on teaching. His performance credits include Loston Harris III, Nathan Page, and others. His musicality and sense of groove bring much to this recording.

Lenny Robinson has been on the scene for some time now and has made his mark on more Lennythan one occasion with many jazz greats. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Baltimore, he attended Morgan State University as well as the Peabody Conservatory of Music studying with Charles Memphis, Principal Percussionist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. While still in college, he did a European tour with a theatrical jazz ensemble performing at several festivals including Montreux, North Sea and others. After leaving college, he performed with several R&B groups including Jean Carne, Roy Ayers, The O'Jays and others. He then joined the 26th Army Band in Brooklyn, NY where he also became a part of the New York jazz community. He formed a band that included such artists as Onaje Alan Gumbs, John Purcell, Anthony Cox and the late Kenny Kirkland. After leaving the Army, Lenny moved to the Washington. D.C. area where he quickly became one of the most in demand drummers in town performing with such artists as Clifford Jordon, George Coleman, Archie Shepp, Larry Willis, Dewey Redman, Ronnie Mathews, John Hicks, Buster Williams, Roy Hargrove and others. He also has gone on the road with such artists as Ahmad Jamal, Lou Donaldson, Vanessa Rubin, Don Braden, and is currently in Stanley Turrentine's working band.

As you can see, this group has prepared themselves and been prepared for this endeavor. The compositions are well thought out and performed at an extremely high level. The music is both swingin' and funky. Three For All is poised to take jazz into the 21st century.
